Hida Whispers:
A Dialogue with Nature & Craft

Introduction|前言

From Hida’s forests to its woodworking studios, the program explores how local knowledge, craftsmanship, and everyday needs shape design. Through observation and hands-on practice, participants develop the awareness and judgment needed to make thoughtful decisions in the age of AI.

Rooted in Hida|

In Hida, forests have shaped both craftsmanship and local life. Seasonal changes, natural resources, and generations of expertise guide how artisans work, revealing the lasting connections between people and their surroundings.

Making with Nature|

Following wood from its source to the workshop, participants learn how artisans respond to different properties and practical constraints. Hands-on exercises encourage them to test ideas, refine forms, and make choices based on real conditions.

Forest Craft

Finding Inspiration in Nature

Beginning in Hida’s forests, participants discover the colors, textures, and forms of their surroundings. Selected leaves and branches are arranged in transparent resin, turning small discoveries into personal objects that reflect each individual’s perspective.

Forest Gathering

Leaves, branches, and natural details offer inspiration through their colors, textures, and forms.

Material Selection

Each element is selected for its color, shape, and potential within the final piece.

Visual Composition

Arranging natural elements in transparent resin creates depth, contrast, and a personal composition.

Personal Symbols

Carving a Mark of Your Own

Letters and symbols with personal meaning become the starting points for woodworking. Guided by artisans, participants carve and refine their designs, learning how lines, proportions, and thickness affect the final form.

Wooden Forms

Familiar letters and symbols take shape through carving and refinement.

Carving Practice

Tools, wood grain, and hand pressure influence each cut.

Surface Details

Sanding and finishing bring definition and texture to each piece.

Everyday Objects

Shaping Form Around Use

Participants design wooden utensils based on their own dining habits. From selecting wood to shaping and finishing, they consider how weight, grip, and edges affect comfort. Repeated testing helps turn familiar movements into practical design decisions.

Everyday Gestures

Familiar hand movements reveal what makes an object comfortable to use.

Wood Character

Grain, weight, and texture guide the shaping of each utensil.

Functional Balance

Testing and adjustments improve the fit between hand and object.

Art Encounters

Into Contemporary Art

A visit to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, extends learning beyond the workshop. Exhibitions and architecture offer different ways to experience space, movement, and interaction, opening new perspectives on art and everyday life.

From Forest to Future Design|

Hands-on learning and cultural encounters build the knowledge and judgment behind meaningful design. AI may expand creative possibilities, but people give them direction through what they know, value, and choose.
