Everyday Brand:
Design Views from Tokyo

Introduction|前言

Post-pandemic design highlights sharper tensions between education and industry. TAKEO emphasized the role of paper and publishing in material choices; at Book & Design, publisher Yuko Miyago offered feedback on creative concepts with attention to design details; and Aya Yagi, Art Director at Dentsu, showed how branding responds to society.

Design as Response|

Design today is challenged to move beyond skill training and toward building dialogue across different fields. By linking material, publishing, and branding, design gains the capacity to connect experiences, reveal its influence, and open new possibilities for practice.

Toward the Future|

Looking ahead, designers build creative foundations through layered experiences. With sharp observation and cross-field connections, they develop lasting capacities to bring relevance across contexts; at the same time, branding will shift from surface aesthetics to “story-living.”

面對未來,設計師藉由多重經驗奠定創作基礎。透過敏銳的觀察與跨領域連結,逐步累積持續的能力,在不同情境中展現價值與意義;

Dentsu

Branding Details

At Dentsu, Aya Yagi shared how large-scale and commercial projects are prepared and executed—from early research and proposals to tangible printed outcomes. By presenting processes rarely visible outside the industry, Aya gave students access to details that are seldom encountered in academic settings.

Inside Process

From preparation to proposals, branding is built on unseen groundwork.

Concrete Works

Commercial projects, print samples, and books showed how ideas take shape in the industry.

Professional Demands

Attention to scale, accuracy, and execution defines how branding sustains value.

Material Choices

Paper as Design

At TAKEO, paper is not just a sample but a decision point. After the pandemic, as publishing leans toward digital, TAKEO expands through exhibitions and cross-disciplinary projects, showing how weight, texture, and finish keep paper central to design practice.

Book & Design

Publishing as Practice

Book & Design, a publisher, gallery, and book shop led by Yuko Miyago, shows how publishing becomes an active part of design. With Akira Kobayashi’s publications and professional dialogue as reference points, it highlighted how typography, color, and paper choices turn ideas into printed expressions.

Book & Design

From Projects to Future Design|

From paper at TAKEO to design encounters at Book & Design and brand work at Dentsu, the program revealed how practice, material, and context shape detail. These layered experiences form a foundation for imagining the role of design in the future.
