Into Design:
First Steps of Exploration

Introduction|前言

Guiding high school students beyond the classroom, the journey unfolded through self-portraits that revealed hidden emotions of youth, continued with digital prototyping that transformed ideas into form, and culminated at Kanazawa’s 21st Century Museum. Design became more than abstract imagination—it emerged as a language of self-expression and new possibilities.

Youth Unfolded|

Whether exploring the self or turning ideas into works, we joined high school students in a journey to rethink forms of expression. From self-portraiture to hands-on making, and finally to artistic experience, creativity unfolded beyond the classroom with curiosity, courage, and new possibilities.

Classroom Reimagined|

Teaching is redefined, shifting from “instructing, delivering, and explaining” to “guiding, inspiring, and empowering.” The classroom is reinterpreted: not about what is remembered, but about how to think and discern, how to create and explore—becoming a point of departure toward the unknown.

Self-Portraiture

Mr. Himitsu!

“Himitsu” (ひみつ) means “secret,” echoing the hidden world of youth. Through three cycles of self-portraiture, participants portrayed themselves and one another, using lines, symbols, and colors to explore identity, emotion, and the unspoken.

Unseen Reflections

Through blind and mutual drawing, routines were broken and the self was reflected in others’ lines.

Breaking Habits

Creating with hand-torn tape gave rise to unexpected forms, offering a new attempt at self-expression.

Portraits in Contrast

Raised on the streets, life-size portraits in bold contrasts captured who we were at seventeen.

FabLab

If You Can Imagine It

Another path for making—FabLab prototyping. Here, participants moved from traditional craft to digital tools like 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC, learning how ideas take shape and cultivating a maker’s mindset.

Kanazawa 21

21st Century Museum

Known as “Marubi,” this circular museum feels like a city park where contemporary art is open to all. From the illusion of a pool viewed from above to light installations and participatory works, it offers playful ways to encounter art beyond the classroom.

First Step in Design to the Future|

For high school students, this was a true introduction to design—revealing that it has no fixed answers, but unfolds through seeing, trying, and understanding. Respect and self-trust will remain the foundation for future learning and expression.
