Illustrators’ Views:
Design Possibilities from Tokyo

Introduction|前言

In Tokyo, illustration, design, and daily life take many forms. The Tokyoiter captures the city through cover art, JAGDA’s Yusaku Kamekura New Designer Award highlights emerging voices, and in Yokohama’s Koganecho, artists and residents revive spaces so creativity continues to flow through the city.

Creative Openings|

Whether beginners or professional creators, everyone can explore new forms of expression through the many facets of painting. The pursuit of vivid color goes beyond intuition, carrying dreams, passion, effort, and a long history.

Living Galleries|

A gallery is redefined: no longer limited to white cubes for art, but extended to design-focused spaces in streets, residencies, and ggg. Wherever creators set the frame, everyday places can become stages where design takes the lead.

The Tokyoiter

Cover Stories

The Tokyoiter turns moments of Tokyo into striking covers. We sketched imagined views, met founders David Robert (France) and Andrew Joyce (UK), and saw works by local creators. For many non-full-time illustrators, cover design is a way back to pure creation and dialogue.

Urban Layers

New and old elements converge—this is what The Tokyoiter represents.

Creative Voices

From childhood fragments to ukiyo-e or Akihabara, each work reveals diverse tensions and emotions.

Crossing Paths

Covers bring together different lives and voices in a shared language.

Illustration in Residence

Koganecho

Another path for illustrators—the artist residency program. Here, participants worked with iwa-enogu mineral pigments, colors used from Western frescoes to Japanese painting, and after learning their origins, hand-crafted pigments of their own.

JAGDA

Emerging Voices

At ggg, Japan’s highest stage for design, the JAGDA Yusaku Kamekura New Designer Award showcased how beauty emerges in subtle details. Across posters, books, images, and packaging, it highlighted refined aesthetics and the integration of illustration and design.

From Illustration to Design Futures|

The program revealed how illustration is more than image-making—it opens pathways to explore material, detail, and dialogue. For creators, these experiences become an invitation to expand perspectives and recognize new possibilities for the future.
